Spirit Airlines is reducing the number of flights from Arnold Palmer Regional Airport serving Fort Lauderdale in April by 21% 

 

LATROBE, Pa. (KDKA) — Spirit Airlines is eliminating another flight from Arnold Palmer Regional Airport. 

The move will leave Orlando as the only daily destination out of Latrobe. First, Spirit Airlines cut seasonal flights to Fort Myers, Florida, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Now, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

They used to love flying out of Arnold Palmer Regional Airport, or at least they did, when Paul Brophy could work from home.

"I used to fly to here five or six times a year. Now I try very hard to remain here once a week, if there are instances where that is pragmatic."

But the Greensburg couple is frustrated with the loss of yet another airline flight.

"They used to fly to almost anywhere. Now they limit themselves to fewer destinations," Brophy said. 

RephraseAccording to the Westmoreland County Airport Authority, on average Arnold Palmer Regional Airport sees about 150,000 passengers flying in and out annually. All of it means dollars and cents for local businesses.

"We have a lot of people who stay with us" explained Kevin Zilli, general manager for the SpringHill Suites by Marriott Pittsburgh Latrobe. The hotel has a twin city option available to guests who miss out on pets or the workforce and are looking for a soothing sanctuary.

"I am thinking it is not going to be gone," said Anthony Denuzio II, owner of Denuzio's Steak and Stone Restaurant. "We have a tremendous amount of traffic that comes through our restaurants on a daily basis for this route. It will not be missed."

But while it may seem like all gloom and doom is slowly creeping into the skies because Spirit Airlines cut a route by claiming that the dispute over jet fuel prices is so intense that it is causing widespread disruptions in the skies, Westmoreland County Airport Authority Executive Director Gabe Monzo says it's what all airlines do.
